In July 2007, Auckland and Manukau city councils endorsed the $1.33 billion package of integrated transport improvements for the east of Auckland between Glen Innes and Manukau city centre. This project is known as the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative – or AMETI.

Their decisions mean planning can progress for the new infrastructure and services that make up AMETI.

The AMETI transport package will improve the efficiency of business and freight transport by road, and significantly increase the number of people travelling by bus and train.  It will also make walking and cycling safe and attractive options for local trips.

The AMETI project will be staged over approximately 15 years.  Bus lanes along Mt Wellington Highway and Ti Rakau Drive and a new street network in Glen Innes are expected to be constructed first, between 2012 and 2016.  These changes are designed to coincide with the implementation of improved passenger transport in the area.

The project will support the growth of industry and jobs.  It will be the catalyst for significant change and growth east of the southern motorway.  AMETI will help support business and residential growth planned for Glen Innes, Panmure, Mt Wellington, and Sylvia Park in Auckland city, and for areas such as Pakuranga, Flat Bush and East Tamaki in Manukau.
